Course Overview

This program follows the curriculum guidelines of the New York State Education Department and covers medical terminology, general patient care, patient care and preparation related to phlebotomy and EKG, safety, professional responsibilities, infection control, vital signs, and CPR.

This program introduces students to the anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, the functions and composition of blood, common blood tests and their normal ranges, as well as the procedures and equipment used for specimen and blood collection. 

This program will also present an introduction to the EKG Unit, electrocardiography procedures, and cardiac anatomy. It will teach students to recognize cardiac emergencies, prepare patients for EKG, read and interpret EKG reports, identify normal value ranges for EKG records, and recognize reportable abnormalities. The course will provide an overview of EKG-related procedures, such as ultrasound cardiography, Holter monitoring, and stress tests. Students will learn how to operate the EKG machine, record the cardiac cycle, and perform a 12-Lead electrocardiogram.
